Friday Focus: MIDFLD

New limited edition soccer inspired streetwear from MIDFLD brand now featured on

It’s time for our LacednLit Friday Focus where we take a deeper dive into some of the lesser-known streetwear brands on the come up. This week we had a chance to spend a few minutes with Daniel D'Angelo, the Founder of MIDFLD.

About the Brand

MIDFLD is the space, the space on the field and in the mind. It is the center, the middle path. Being completely free in that space, free of all thoughts, present in the moment. Find the space. This is the ethos of MIDFLD. It's what we believe in.

Hey Daniel thanks for taking the time to talk. So let’s start at the beginning. Explain VSS and MIDFLD for a moment. VSS is a store and MIDFLD is a brand? What came first?

I had a soccer store called VSS that I opened in 2009. I wanted to have my own brand so I founded MIDFLD in 2014. That’s why you’ll see the #14 on a lot of our stuff.

We checked out your website and read your about us page. You talk about MIDFLD meaning space, space on the field, space in your mind. What’s the story behind Find The Space?

That’s a popular term in the soccer world. There you start in the middle and you find your space. For me there is also a Buddhist philosophy taught to me by my Mom. It’s all about being still, being grounded. You know meditation, mindfulness, being present.

When we look at your categories we see a heavy influence from soccer and a euro feel. With the jerseys and joggers, etc. What the background there?

Yes, I played soccer in college. I really have a passion for it and I was born in London, England so yeah there’s certainly a euro feel to my designs.

Where do the ideas for your designs come from?

Growing up I wasn’t only into soccer; I also skated, hung out with the dead heads. Stuff like that gave me a well-rounded feel for what I liked and what would resonate with others.

What’s your process for turning an idea into an actual product?

I always start simple, simple text something wearable with a vintage well-worn feel. I won’t sell anything that I wouldn’t want to wear. I also try to throw stuff out there see what works and learn from my mistakes.

What’s a signature product that put you on the map?

I’d have to say it’s anything with our basic Find The Space logo. It’s really popular for us. Our NY hoodies are also really popular. People love the look and feel.

Can you name a couple brands that inspired you when you were just getting into streetwear?

I was into the 90s skate scene just like most people my age. I like Counter Culture and a lesser-known brand called Seedless Clothing. They were ahead of their time and still make cool things out of San Diego, California.

Name a coupe brands you respect today.

Well, obviously Supreme, but another is Stone Island. I really respect their quality and attention to detail.

What coming next for MIDFLD?

We’ve got a lot on deck. We have collaboration with Zinedine Zidane and we’ll continue our partnership with Hummel USA the Danish footwear and sportswear brand. Our focus is to step it up to the next level in 2019.
