This just in… Ewing Athletics has collaborated with Grillo’s Pickles on a new sneaker concept and it’s dillicious.
The first question you might ask is why “The Pickle”? Well, there’s an interesting story behind this latest release.
Turns out Travis Grillo the founder of Grillo’s Pickles got snubbed by Nike when they turned him down for a job as a sneaker designer. This was a blessing in disguise for Grillo, who quickly shifted his passion for sneakers towards his other love…pickles. In 2008 he launched his pickle business selling the most delicious, crunchy, mouth-watering pickles off a cart in Boston. Now that we know the connection, let’s discuss the kicks.
The limited edition Ewing Sport Lite sneaker also known as “The Pickle” features a plush green suede upper and green leather accents to pay homage to what people are calling “the world’s best pickle.” This new release sports icy clear soles that are so fresh they even say it and also have a clear lace lining to reflect the jars that the pickles come packaged in. Similar attributes are the white laces that represent fresh California garlic and hints of Grillo's hand-made wooden pickle cart throughout. On the back of the shoe you’ll find Sam the Pickle Man. Sam is Grillo’s iconic mascot. Take a peek inside the shoe and you’ll see the insole features an image of the OG pickle cart that got Grillo started.
In a recent press release Ewing Athletics President, David Goldberg, said "Premium Pete from Yougottaeatthis.com, made the connection and we were able to come up with a great design with a fresh look to match the pickles. We have done other food related projects in the past and we try to make each one better than the last. Ewing Athletics is always looking to collaborate with companies that would typically be outside of the box for a sneaker brand and Grillo's is a perfect partner."
When Travis Grillo started selling pickles in 2008 they were Two for $1. Today you can cop a pair of the Ewing Athletic "The Pickle" for a buck forty.
